The world of the original Planet of the Apes was brought to life with groundbreaking makeup and scenic locations. But almost as interesting (and certainly more creepy) are home videos shot by Roddy McDowall, who played Cornelius in the film. With War for the Planet of the Apes opening Friday, it is time to take a look at those home movies, that will give fans of the classic sci-fi franchise a smile, and maybe a slight recoil. In 1968, audiences were transported to what appeared to be some distant, archaic world overrun with highly intelligent, talking (and at times, brutal) apes. The makeup for the film was so ahead of its time that its makeup artist, the late John Chambers, received an honorary Oscar before the category was even recognized by the Academy. And because his was work so good, seeing actors lounge around on the set doing everyday things is quite a sight. There is no sound, just instrumental music with the assorted moments uploaded to YouTube by makeup artist William Forsche, From actors having their makeup applied to smoking cigarettes to lounging in the sun to some hard-core tan-lines on star Charlton Heston, this video has it all.
